STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Horn Post) — A high-level delegation from the Republic of Somaliland held talks with members of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm as part of ongoing diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening relations between Somaliland and Sweden.
The Somaliland delegation included Somaliland Roads Development Agency Director Mohamed Farah, Berbera Oil Terminal Manager Mohamed Sadiq, and Central Bank of Somaliland Deputy Governor Hamse Abdirahman Khayre. The officials were welcomed in Stockholm by Somaliland’s representative to Sweden and other diaspora community leaders.
The meeting brought together several Swedish lawmakers affiliated with parliamentary groups supportive of Somaliland, including Members of Parliament Markus Wiechel, Magnus Oscarsson, Björn Söder, Erik Hellsborn, Magnus Resare and Arin Karapet, representing different political parties in Sweden.
Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and diplomatic engagement between Somaliland and Sweden, as well as recent political developments in the Horn of Africa. The Somaliland delegation briefed Swedish lawmakers on the country’s political and economic progress, regional security dynamics, and the diplomatic implications surrounding growing international engagement with Somaliland.
During the meeting, the delegation also presented certificates of appreciation sent by Somaliland Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adan Bakaal in recognition of the Swedish lawmakers’ continued advocacy and support for Somaliland’s international recognition campaign.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, an increasing number of Swedish parliamentarians from multiple political parties — estimated at around 17% of members — have expressed support for encouraging the Swedish government to consider Somaliland’s recognition efforts.
The Stockholm talks reflect Somaliland’s expanding diplomatic engagement in Europe as it seeks broader international partnerships and recognition.
