MOGADISHU, Somalia (HornPost) Somalia’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s appointment of an ambassador to Somaliland. It also rejected plans to establish an Israeli embassy in Hargeisa.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the ministry criticised Israel’s diplomatic moves. These included the presentation of credentials to Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro and the laying of a cornerstone for a proposed embassy.
The ministry said Israel acted without the consent of Somalia’s federal government. It described the moves as violations of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.
Somalia declared the actions “null and void and without legal effect.”
Somalia Rejects Israel’s Diplomatic Moves
The ministry said Hargeisa and the Somaliland region remain part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
It also referred to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry argued that foreign governments must obtain consent from a sovereign state before establishing diplomatic relations and permanent missions on its territory.
It added that no unilateral action can change the status of Somali territory.
Mogadishu Warns of Regional Tensions
The statement also criticised Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December 2025.
According to the ministry, the African Union, IGAD, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have already rejected that recognition.
Somalia warned that the latest developments could increase tensions in the Horn of Africa. It also raised concerns about regional security around the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The ministry said actions that encourage fragmentation and disregard internationally recognised borders could further destabilise the region.
Somalia Calls for Reversal of Measures
Somalia called on Israel to reverse the measures immediately.
It also urged all states and international organisations to reject the moves. The ministry asked them to avoid any engagement that could give the actions legitimacy.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government said it reserves the right to take diplomatic, political and legal measures under international law.
It said those measures would aim to defend Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
The statement ended with a firm message:
“Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. The unity of the Somali nation is not negotiable.”
