AL-JAWF, Yemen, (HornPost) Yemeni government forces have launched a major military offensive against Houthi fighters in the northern province of Al-Jawf, seeking to capture strategic mountain positions east of the provincial capital, Al-Hazm.
The operation, known as “Yemen Dawn,” aims to reverse Houthi territorial gains and restore government control over areas held by the group.
Government forces say they have taken control of the Huwaishan mountain range, a strategic area that overlooks key military positions and supply routes. The government-aligned forces say the advance could weaken Houthi defensive positions and restrict the movement of their fighters.
Al-Jawf holds strategic importance because it borders Saudi Arabia and connects to several key Yemeni provinces, including oil-rich Marib. The province also serves as a defensive barrier for government-held areas in eastern Yemen and provides access to Houthi strongholds in the north.
Military analysts say control of the high ground could give government forces a better view of Houthi movements and supply routes. However, they have warned that troops should advance carefully and avoid moving too quickly.
The military developments come after Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council appointed Major General Amin Ali Al-Akimi as governor of Al-Jawf and commander of the province’s military axis.
The appointment is intended to strengthen military coordination, unify command structures and improve cooperation among government forces and local groups, according to analysts cited by Al Jazeera.
The Houthis have controlled Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and much of the country’s north since 2014. The internationally recognized government continues to seek the recovery of territory held by the group.
The latest fighting marks another escalation in Yemen’s prolonged conflict, which has caused widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.
