HARGEISA, Somaliland (HornPost) Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) has attended celebrations marking the 33rd anniversary of the founding of the Somaliland Police Force.
The ceremony took place at the force’s General Headquarters, where the president delivered a speech praising police officers for their service to the country.
Irro thanked the force for its work and highlighted its historic role in protecting peace, security, stability and public order. He also praised officers for safeguarding the lives and property of Somaliland residents.
The president commended the police force for its achievements, particularly its efforts to improve professional standards and modernize its operations.
Marking the anniversary, Irro paid tribute to police officers who lost their lives while carrying out their national duties over the past 33 years. He also recognized former police commanders and senior officials whose leadership, he said, helped strengthen state institutions and maintain security.
“We owe an everlasting debt of gratitude to the heroes who wore the uniform to serve their country and their people,” the president said.
Irro said the patience and sacrifices of police officers had strengthened public confidence in the force. He added that officers had consistently carried out their duties with professionalism and dedication.
“The police force is the backbone of the success we have achieved in maintaining peace and stability,” he said.
The president also said Somaliland’s peace and statehood had been built through cooperation between the government and the public. He stressed that protecting those achievements was a shared responsibility.
“I would like to thank citizens from all walks of life, religious scholars, businesspeople, traditional leaders, women and young people who support the police force in carrying out its duties,” Irro said.
He said developing Somaliland’s national security forces remained one of the government’s top priorities.
The president highlighted investment in education, professional training, equipment and modern technology as key areas for improving the capabilities of the security institutions.
Irro urged police officers to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and accountability while respecting the country’s Constitution and laws. He also called on them to protect citizens’ lives, property and dignity.
“Every citizen deserves justice, protection and respect. Even when a person commits a crime, they must be treated in accordance with the law, regardless of their political views, social status or background,” he said.
Meanwhile, Somaliland Police Chief Brig. Gen. Abdirahman Abdullahi Hassan addressed the ceremony and outlined the force’s achievements in maintaining security over the past year.
The police force’s Operations Department also presented a report on crimes recorded during the previous year and explained how officers had responded to security incidents.
The ceremony concluded in a calm atmosphere.
