WASHINGTON (HornPost) — The Democratic Party has won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. The results mark a major shift in American politics and a significant setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Democrats secured major victories in the House of Representatives and the Senate. They also won several closely contested races in states that had strongly supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The results will reshape the political balance in Washington. They will also affect Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
According to projections reported by The Associated Press, Democrats gained at least seven Senate seats and more than two dozen seats in the House. They also won several state governor races previously held by Republicans.
Democrats Flip Key Senate Seats
Democrats made significant gains in several states that have traditionally supported Republican candidates.
They flipped Senate seats in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. The victories helped the party secure control of the 100-member Senate.
The result in Kansas attracted particular attention. The state had not elected a Democratic senator in nearly a century.
Democrats also defended important seats in Georgia and Michigan. Their victories strengthened the party’s position in the Senate.
With at least 54 seats, Democrats will hold a working majority in the upper chamber. This gives them greater influence over legislation, government appointments and congressional investigations.
Republicans Lose House Majority
The Democratic gains extended beyond the Senate.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats flipped more than 24 districts. Several victories came in areas that Trump had won comfortably in 2024.
The party also made important gains in states such as Iowa and Texas. These results helped Democrats secure more than the 218 seats required for a House majority.
The new majority will give Democratic leaders control of key committees. It will also allow them to influence the legislative agenda and increase scrutiny of the Trump administration.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House, is expected to become the next speaker if elected by members of the new Congress.
If confirmed, Jeffries would become the first Black speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Economy and Iran War Shape Election Results
Several issues influenced voters during the campaign, including rising living costs, inflation, the economy and the war involving Iran.
According to an Associated Press voter poll, many Americans expressed frustration over high prices and the government’s handling of economic challenges.
The conflict with Iran also became a major political issue. Rising fuel prices added pressure on households and increased criticism of the administration’s foreign policy.
In addition, concerns about government corruption and the need for stronger congressional oversight featured prominently in the election debate.
The results suggest that economic and foreign policy concerns played an important role in the Republican losses. However, voters also expressed reservations about the Democratic Party, creating pressure on its leaders to deliver results.
Trump Faces a More Challenging Final Two Years
The election outcome presents a new challenge for President Trump.
With Democrats controlling both chambers, the president will face greater opposition to his legislative proposals.
Democrats will have the power to block legislation, challenge government appointments and launch investigations into federal agencies and administration policies.
They have also promised to focus on the cost of living, healthcare and reversing some Republican-backed changes to federal health programs.
Trump acknowledged the Democrats’ victories and said he was open to working with the opposition. However, he also warned that disagreements could lead to political gridlock.
The president further acknowledged that the war involving Iran had affected the election, particularly through its impact on fuel prices.
Vice President JD Vance also pointed to the conflict as a major factor behind the Republican losses.
Election Produces Historic Firsts
The 2026 midterm elections also produced several historic political milestones.
Abdul El-Sayed won the Senate race in Michigan, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota is set to become the first Native American woman to serve in the Senate. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire will become the first openly gay man elected to the chamber.
The elections also produced the country’s first Black female governor and first Native American female governor.
These victories reflect changes in the country’s political representation and the growing diversity of elected officials.
What Happens Next?
The new Congress is scheduled to begin its work on January 3, 2027.
Until then, Republicans will continue to hold their existing majorities. This period will give the outgoing Congress an opportunity to address pending legislation and government funding issues.
Once the new Congress takes office, Democrats will have greater power to shape national policy and oversee the administration.
However, controlling Congress does not mean Democrats can automatically implement every campaign promise. They will still face political divisions, legislative procedures and the possibility of presidential vetoes.
The election has therefore changed the balance of power in Washington. It has also opened a new chapter in the relationship between the White House and Congress.
For Trump, the results represent a major political challenge halfway through his second term. For Democrats, they create an opportunity to demonstrate that they can turn electoral gains into practical results for American voters.
