HARGEISA (Horn Post) — Puntland has accused Somalia’s Federal Government of preparing a military offensive against the semi-autonomous state by allegedly using neighboring Galmudug as a staging ground, according to a statement issued by Puntland authorities on Friday.
In the press release dated July 25, 2026, Puntland said it had observed what it described as “all movements” by the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alleging that federal authorities were coordinating military activities through Galmudug, which shares a border with Puntland.
The regional administration condemned what it called attempts to involve the Somalian Police Force (SPF) in what it described as an unlawful military operation against Puntland. It also accused the Federal Government of deploying members of the Somalian National Armed Forces (SNA) to support the alleged campaign.
Puntland further claimed that the Federal Government was seeking to mobilize Galmudug’s regional forces and local clans to participate in military operations targeting Puntland territory. According to the statement, the objective would be to undermine security, disrupt cooperation between neighboring communities, and destabilize peaceful coexistence along the Puntland-Galmudug border.
The administration urged residents of Puntland to remain vigilant and support the region’s security institutions amid what it characterized as escalating tensions.
The Federal Government of Somalia had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
The accusations come amid continuing political disputes between Mogadishu and Puntland over governance, constitutional reforms, and security coordination, adding to concerns over stability in the Horn of Africa.
