LONDON, England (HornPost) — Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal are among the leading names in the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award.
The 70th edition of the ceremony is scheduled to take place at the London Palladium on Monday. It marks the first time England has hosted the event.
French magazine France Football established the award in 1956. It recognizes outstanding individual performances in football.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. GMT, or 11 p.m. East Africa Time.
Mbappé, Kane and Yamal in Focus
France forward Mbappé is among the players attracting attention after another productive period in front of goal. His performances for Real Madrid and the French national team have kept him in the Ballon d’Or discussion.
England captain Kane is also a prominent contender. His goal-scoring performances for Bayern Munich and England have strengthened his profile ahead of the ceremony.
Spain international Yamal has emerged as another major name in the race. The Barcelona forward has attracted attention for his performances at club and international level.
The three players have different claims to the award. Voters will consider individual performances, decisive contributions and achievements with their respective teams.
London Hosts the Ceremony for the First Time
This year’s ceremony marks the award’s 70th edition.
London’s role as host also recalls the inaugural winner, English forward Stanley Matthews, who received the first Ballon d’Or in 1956.
The ceremony will recognize achievements in men’s and women’s football. Other honors will recognize young players, goalkeepers, coaches and clubs.
International football journalists vote for the Ballon d’Or. Their assessment considers individual performance, team achievements, decisive contributions, sporting conduct and fair play.
Who Will Win the 2026 Ballon d’Or?
Mbappé, Kane and Yamal are among the players attracting attention ahead of the announcement.
Kane could become the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001, while Yamal could add another major individual honor to his growing list of achievements. Mbappé is seeking to turn his individual performances into the sport’s highest-profile individual prize.
The winner will be confirmed at the ceremony.
