Somaliland President Suspends All Government Award Ceremonies Amid Worsening Drought.

Hargeisa (Horn Post) – The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdiraxmaan Mohamed Abdilaahi (Irro) has issued an official directive suspending all government-organized award ceremonies, staff recognition events, and related official functions across state institutions, effective 15 February 2026 until further notice.

According to a press statement released by the Somaliland Presidency, the directive applies to all ministries, independent commissions, agencies, and government institutions.

The decision was communicated through an official circular addressed to heads of public bodies nationwide.

The Presidency stated that the move was taken in response to severe and widespread drought conditions affecting large parts of Somaliland, which have had a significant impact on livelihoods and the national economy.

The statement noted that the ongoing drought has led to acute water shortages, substantial livestock losses, population displacement, and increased economic hardship, particularly among rural communities and vulnerable households.

“In light of the prevailing humanitarian situation, it has become necessary for state institutions to demonstrate national responsibility, solidarity, compassion, and shared concern,” the statement said, adding that humanitarian priorities and the broader public interest must take precedence during this period.

The directive requires immediate implementation and full compliance by all affected government entities.

However, the Presidency clarified that the decision does not apply to official ceremonies marking the inauguration of national development projects which are exempt from the suspension order.
