ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post) January 28, 2026 — H.E. Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance of Ethiopia, held a high-level meeting today with Mr. Christopher Landau, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, to discuss Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reform program, expanding investment opportunities, and deepening bilateral economic cooperation.
The meeting, attended by Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development, and Dr. Eyob Tekalign, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, highlighted the positive progress of Ethiopia’s reform agenda and an improving economic outlook. Minister Ahmed noted that reforms have enhanced the investment climate, creating competitive opportunities across key sectors of the economy.
“Ethiopia remains committed to implementing reforms that attract investors and strengthen our strategic partnerships,” Minister Ahmed said, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with U.S. institutions in health, infrastructure, and trade projects.
The finance minister also briefed Deputy Secretary Landau on Ethiopia’s flagship New International Airport Project, underlining its strategic importance for economic growth, regional connectivity, and trade facilitation, and invited U.S. financial institutions and contractors to participate in the project’s development.
In response, Deputy Secretary Landau commended Ethiopia’s progress, expressed strong interest in expanding U.S. business engagement, and reaffirmed commitment to bilateral cooperation. Both sides pledged to deepen private sector engagement and strengthen cooperation in support of Ethiopia’s sustainable economic development.
This meeting underscores the growing Ethiopia–U.S. partnership, highlighting opportunities in investment, infrastructure, trade, and economic reform, and reaffirming Washington’s commitment to support Ethiopia’s reform and development agenda.
