Somaliland to Send 25 Water and Irrigation Experts for Training in Israel.

Hargeisa, Republic of Somaliland | (Horn Post) The Government of the Republic of Somaliland is set to formally bid farewell on Tuesday to 25 technical experts who will travel to Israel for specialized training in water management and irrigation.

The training program focuses on modern water technologies, irrigation systems, and efficient water-use practices, areas in which Israel is widely recognized as a global leader.

Officials said the initiative marks a significant milestone in Somaliland–Israel relations, as it represents the first major technical cooperation project implemented since Somaliland received formal recognition from Israel at the end of 2025.

According to Somaliland authorities, the program aims to build local capacity and strengthen national expertise in the water sector, which remains a critical challenge due to recurring droughts and limited utilization of rainwater resources.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously pledged support for Somaliland in key sectors, including water management, agriculture, technology, security, and other strategic fields where Israel has advanced experience.

Somaliland officials say the knowledge gained from the training is expected to contribute to long-term solutions for water scarcity, improved irrigation systems, and enhanced resilience against climate-related shocks.

The country continues to face repeated drought cycles, and experts believe that improved water harvesting and irrigation techniques could significantly reduce vulnerability and boost agricultural productivity.

The departure of the experts is seen as part of Somaliland’s broader efforts to expand international technical partnerships and address structural development challenges through skills transfer and innovation.
