LUGHAYA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Minister of Energy and Minerals of the Republic of Somaliland, Ahmed Jama Barre, has laid the foundation stone for several development projects in the coastal town of Lughaya, marking a significant step in local infrastructure and service delivery improvements.
The projects were launched after the minister’s participation in recent peace meetings in western Somaliland, underscoring the government’s strategy of linking stability efforts with socio-economic development initiatives.
The newly announced projects include the electrification of Lughaya District Hospital, the construction of a primary and intermediate school, and the establishment of an ice storage facility aimed at supporting the local fishing economy.
Officials say the hospital electrification project is expected to improve healthcare delivery by ensuring reliable power for critical medical services. The education project is intended to expand access to quality learning for children in the district, while the ice storage facility will help preserve fish products, boosting livelihoods in the coastal community.
Speaking during the ceremony, Barre highlighted the importance of integrating development with peacebuilding, noting that such projects are essential for sustainable economic growth and improved living standards.
The initiatives form part of broader government efforts to strengthen infrastructure, enhance public services and support economic resilience in underserved regions across Somaliland.
