MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Post) – Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu’s celebration marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, just days after Washington announced it would end financial support for the U.N. Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).
The event, branded “Freedom250,” brought together Somali government officials, diplomats and international partners to commemorate the United States’ Independence Day and the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
Photos and video released by the U.S. Embassy showed President Hassan Sheikh attending the reception alongside senior Somali officials and members of the diplomatic community.
During the celebration, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Justin Davis highlighted the enduring partnership between the United States and Somalia while emphasizing the values associated with the anniversary.
“Tonight, as we celebrate America’s birthday, we also celebrate the enduring power of people who continue striving toward a better future,” Davis said during the event.
The president’s attendance came in the same week that the United States Mission to the African Union formally announced Washington’s decision to end financial support for UNSOS, arguing that future international assistance to Somalia would remain limited unless Somali leaders unite to address the country’s security and governance challenges.
Despite ending support for UNSOS, the United States said it would continue counterterrorism cooperation, maintain bilateral security partnerships and remain prepared to respond to threats affecting U.S. interests in the region.
The juxtaposition of the diplomatic celebration and Washington’s policy shift has drawn public attention, with some political commentators questioning the timing of the president’s appearance at the event. However, neither Villa Somalia nor the U.S. Embassy publicly linked the Independence Day celebration to the funding decision.
The United States remains one of Somalia’s most significant international partners, providing assistance in security, humanitarian relief, governance and development, even as its approach to supporting international operations in Somalia continues to evolve.
