DOHA, Qatar (HornPost) —Somalia and Qatar have reaffirmed their close diplomatic ties following high-level talks in Doha between Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
The meeting comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen international partnerships, attract investment, and consolidate recent gains in security and economic development.
According to a statement released by the Government of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, received a written message from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The message focused on bilateral relations and ways to further expand cooperation between the two countries.
The letter was delivered by Prime Minister Hamza during his official visit to Qatar, where he held extensive discussions with senior Qatari leaders on issues of mutual interest.
Focus on Economic Development and Security
During the talks, Prime Minister Hamza briefed the Qatari leadership on Somalia’s economic and social conditions, highlighting progress achieved by the Federal Government in recent years.
The Somali leader outlined advances in governance, security, and stabilization efforts, as well as ongoing programs aimed at rebuilding state institutions and improving economic opportunities across the country.
According to Somalia’s government, the two prime ministers discussed regional and international security challenges, peacebuilding initiatives, and ways to enhance cooperation in addressing issues that affect global trade and economic stability.
The discussions reflected Somalia’s growing efforts to position itself as a stable partner in the Horn of Africa while strengthening ties with Gulf nations that play an important role in regional investment and development.
Qatar Praises Somalia’s Progress
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman praised Somalia’s recent achievements and welcomed the progress made by the Somali government in advancing stability and development.
He described relations between Qatar and Somalia as strong and rooted in mutual cooperation, reaffirming Doha’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s continued growth and development.
The meeting highlighted the increasingly close relationship between the two countries, which have expanded cooperation in areas ranging from infrastructure and humanitarian assistance to governance support and economic development.
Somalia Seeks Stronger Bilateral Cooperation
While neither side announced specific agreements or financial commitments following the meeting, both governments emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation.
The Qatari statement noted that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s message concerned “bilateral ties and ways to further deepen and expand them,” indicating that Somalia is pursuing broader political, economic, and strategic engagement with Qatar.

He said the Somali people remain grateful for Qatar’s position during periods when Somalia’s sovereignty faced challenges, describing the relationship as one built on friendship and mutual respect.
At the conclusion of the talks, Hamza formally delivered President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s message to the Qatari leadership, reaffirming Mogadishu’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Doha across multiple sectors.
The meeting is expected to further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries as they seek closer collaboration on economic development, regional security, investment, and international cooperation.
