Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense has announced a proposal to establish a multinational maritime defense coalition aimed at protecting international shipping lanes, safeguarding freedom of navigation, and strengthening maritime security across some of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
According to the ministry, the initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting attended by military chiefs and defense representatives from 43 countries, alongside a delegation from the European Union, underscoring broad international interest in strengthening security cooperation in the region.
The proposed alliance would focus on protecting commercial shipping and maintaining the uninterrupted flow of global trade through the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden—critical maritime corridors linking Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Saudi officials said the coalition is intended to enhance international coordination against evolving maritime threats, including attacks on commercial vessels, regional instability, piracy, and other security risks that could disrupt one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
Under the proposal, Saudi Arabia would serve as the founding member, lead the coalition, and host its permanent headquarters, positioning the Kingdom at the center of a new multinational maritime security framework.
The initiative comes amid growing international concern over security in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, where repeated attacks on commercial shipping have heightened risks to global supply chains, energy exports, and international trade.
If established, the alliance would represent one of the largest multinational maritime security initiatives in the region, bringing together military partners to improve intelligence sharing, naval coordination, and the protection of critical sea lanes that carry a significant share of the world’s commerce.
The announcement also reflects Saudi Arabia’s expanding role in regional security and its efforts to strengthen international cooperation in protecting strategic maritime infrastructure amid increasing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
