Opposition party highlights Somaliland-UK historical relationship and democratic partnership in congratulatory message
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — Somaliland’s Kulmiye Party has issued a congratulatory message to the United Kingdom’s newly appointed prime minister, expressing hopes for stronger bilateral relations and expanded cooperation between Somaliland and the UK.
In a letter signed by Kulmiye Party Chairman Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, the party congratulated the new British leader on assuming office and wished success in serving the people of the United Kingdom.
The party described Kulmiye as one of Somaliland’s principal democratic political parties, saying it has remained committed since its founding in 2002 to constitutional governance, democratic pluralism, peaceful transfers of power, the rule of law and strengthening democratic institutions.
According to the letter, these principles have helped shape Somaliland’s democratic development and have reinforced its longstanding relationship with the United Kingdom.
Kulmiye also said the leadership transition in the UK comes at what it described as an important moment in Somaliland’s democratic journey. The party expressed hope that Britain would continue to build on its historic relationship with Somaliland, citing shared democratic values, longstanding ties and a mutual commitment to peace, stability and international cooperation.
The statement further noted that the United Kingdom was the first country to recognize Somaliland’s independence on June 26, 1960, and called for deeper cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Kulmiye concluded by expressing its commitment to strengthening relations between the people of Somaliland and the United Kingdom through expanded political, diplomatic and development cooperation.
