HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) Somaliland’s Ministry of National Planning and Development and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) have agreed to strengthen cooperation by aligning the agency’s upcoming five-year strategy with Somaliland’s Third National Development Plan (NDP III).
The commitment was made during a meeting on Sunday, July 6, between Somaliland Minister of National Planning and Development Kaltun Sheikh Hassan Abdi and a WFP delegation led by Hameed Nuru, the agency’s Country Representative. The delegation also included Khalid Al-Qudsi, Head of the WFP Hargeisa Office, alongside WFP officials Abdikarim Yusuf and Nimco Said.
According to the ministry, discussions focused on ensuring that WFP’s strategic priorities support Somaliland’s long-term development agenda, particularly in food security, nutrition, community resilience, sustainable food systems, climate change adaptation, and strengthening government institutions.
The two sides also explored ways to improve livelihoods by promoting domestic agricultural production, supporting livestock producers and local businesses, and expanding local procurement to stimulate economic growth while enhancing food security.
Minister Kaltun Sheikh Hassan Abdi thanked WFP for its continued partnership with Somaliland, describing the agency as a key contributor to improving food security, strengthening community resilience and supporting national development efforts.
She emphasized that all WFP programs should be fully aligned with the objectives of Somaliland’s Third National Development Plan (NDP III) to ensure sustainable development and build the capacity of national institutions.
For his part, Hameed Nuru praised the Ministry of National Planning and Development for its leadership in coordinating development initiatives and reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the Somaliland government.
He said the organization’s new five-year strategy would be designed around Somaliland’s national development priorities to deliver sustainable, long-term benefits for communities across the country.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to enhance collaboration on development planning, coordination and implementation of priority programs aimed at advancing Somaliland’s national development agenda under NDP III.
