Somaliland Minister Reaffirms Government Support for Youth Innovation and Skills Development

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Minister of Communication and Technology of the Republic of Somaliland, Dr. Abdisalan Hussein Awale, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting young people, describing them as the backbone of the nation and a key driver of future development.

 

The minister made the remarks during the graduation and awards ceremony for the 11th cohort (Batch 11) of the Somaliland Innovation Zone, a technology and entrepreneurship hub managed by the Ministry of Communication and Technology.

 

Dr. Abdisalan Awale and the Ministry’s Director General, Adan Abdillahi Abdalle, presided over the event, which marked the successful completion of training programs designed to equip young Somalilanders with innovation, technology and entrepreneurship skills.

 

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, the Deputy Minister of Education, the Director of the Youth Development Fund and the Chairman of SONYO Umbrella, reflecting broad institutional support for youth development initiatives.

 

Addressing participants, Dr. Awale said Somaliland’s youth constitute nearly 70% of the country’s population, making them a critical pillar of national progress and economic growth. He noted that the ministry’s programs are aligned with the policy agenda of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, which places a strong emphasis on youth empowerment, innovation and capacity building.

 

“Guided by the President’s policy vision, we are committed to standing alongside Somaliland’s youth and supporting their aspirations,” the minister said.

 

Minister Dr. Abdisalan emphasized that education, practical skills and innovation are essential tools for enabling young people to compete in a rapidly evolving digital economy and contribute meaningfully to national development.

 

Officials highlighted the growing role of the Somaliland Innovation Zone in nurturing talent, promoting technological innovation and creating opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals. They said continued investment in youth-focused programs would strengthen Somaliland’s human capital and support the country’s long-term development goals.

 

The event concluded with the recognition and awarding of graduates from the Innovation Zone’s 11th cohort, celebrating their achievements and contributions to Somaliland’s emerging innovation ecosystem.
