Berbera Energy Expansion Project Launched in Somaliland; $24 Million Solar Storage Scheme Unveiled.
BERBERA, Somaliland (Horn post)— Somaliland’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, Eng. Axmed Jaamac Barre, on Monday officially launched a major electricity expansion project in the coastal city of Berbera aimed at strengthening power supply through renewable energy and large-scale storage capacity which UAE-Backed $24M fund.
The $24 million initiative features a 12MWp power generation system alongside a 70MWh battery energy storage unit designed to stabilize electricity distribution and improve reliability for households and businesses in the strategic port city.
Officials said the project is expected to significantly enhance electricity access in Berbera and surrounding areas, while supporting Somaliland’s broader push toward renewable energy and reduced dependence on fuel-based generation.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Ahmed Jaamac Barre said Berbera is steadily evolving into a national commercial hub, driven by government policies focused on attracting international investment.
“Berbera is becoming the commercial center of the country. The President’s policy is centered on bringing large-scale investment into Somaliland. Many investors and companies are showing interest, particularly in Berbera, due to its strategic location,” the minister said.
He added that the government strongly supports renewable energy investment and continues to encourage private sector participation in the energy sector.
The project follows earlier electricity infrastructure upgrades inaugurated by President Dr. Abdirahman Irro, which authorities say have improved service quality, reduced reliance on imported fuel, and increased efficiency in power distribution.
Officials described the new initiative as part of a long-term national strategy to modernize Somaliland’s energy sector and position Berbera as a key logistics and trade hub in the Horn of Africa.
