Regional Leaders Focus on Climate Forecasts, Green Initiatives and Cross-Border Cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

JIGJIGA, Ethiopia (Horn post) Somaliland’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Abdillahi Jama Osman, joined regional leaders and climate experts at a high-level summit on seasonal climate forecasts and climate change impacts in Ethiopia’s Somali Region.

Regional Cooperation on Climate Action

The conference, organized by the Somali Region’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Rural Lands Management, brought together representatives from Ethiopia’s federal government, regional officials, and delegates from Kenya, Djibouti and Somaliland.

In his address, Osman emphasized cross-border cooperation between Somaliland and Ethiopia—particularly the Somali Region—in tackling climate challenges, including drought, deforestation and environmental degradation.

Focus on Climate Impact and Green Initiatives

Participants reviewed climate trends across the Horn of Africa and explored strategies to mitigate long-term risks through national and regional frameworks. Key priorities included advancing Ethiopia’s Green Legacy initiative, combating deforestation and promoting sustainable land management.

Knowledge Sharing and Bilateral Engagement

The Somaliland delegation also held technical discussions with officials from the Somali Region’s environmental authorities, focusing on knowledge exchange and policy coordination.

Diplomatic Engagement and Cultural Reception

Separately, the President of Ethiopia’s Somali Region hosted a reception for visiting delegations. Officials from Djibouti, Kenya—particularly Mandera—and Somaliland attended a state dinner at the Shabelle Tourism Center, where guests were honored with traditional Somali cultural performances.
