Damascus (Horn post) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa during a visit to Damascus, where both leaders discussed expanding bilateral cooperation, regional security, and economic development, according to official statements released Sunday.
Zelenskyy said the meeting focused on strengthening ties between Ukraine and Syria across multiple sectors, including security, trade, and infrastructure. “We agreed to work together to bring greater security and more opportunities for development to our societies,” Zelenskyy wrote in a statement shared on social media.
The Ukrainian leader noted that discussions also covered the broader regional situation and prospects for improving stability. He added that he briefed the Syrian president on the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, expressing appreciation for what he described as Syria’s support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Both sides indicated strong interest in exchanging military and security expertise, a move that analysts say reflects Kyiv’s ongoing efforts to deepen international defense cooperation amid the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine’s role as a global agricultural supplier, emphasizing opportunities for cooperation in food security. “We discussed Ukraine’s position as a reliable supplier of food products and joint opportunities to strengthen food security across the region,” he said.
The talks further addressed Syria’s ongoing energy and infrastructure challenges, with Zelenskyy signaling Kyiv’s readiness to collaborate on development initiatives aimed at boosting economic resilience and improving living conditions.
In a separate statement, President Ahmed al-Sharaa said the visit underscores Syria’s intention to expand its international partnerships in ways that support development and enhance stability. He described the discussions as part of Damascus’ broader strategy to diversify diplomatic and economic relations.
The meeting marks a notable step in Ukraine’s outreach to Middle Eastern partners, as both countries seek to navigate complex geopolitical pressures while pursuing economic recovery and long-term stability.
