WASHINGTON (Horn post) Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran is seeking negotiations amid escalating tensions, while also asserting that a formal agreement with Tehran is not required.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded, alleging that the country is no longer able to mount an effective defense. He claimed that Iran’s air defenses and broader military infrastructure had been “totally decimated.”
“They’re not putting up a fight. They’re not even shooting at us,” Trump said, adding that Iranian officials are “begging to make a deal” as a result of mounting pressure.
However, Trump emphasized that a deal is not necessary for the United States to achieve its objectives. “Iran doesn’t have to make a deal,” he said in response to a question in the Oval Office, describing any agreement as “irrelevant” to U.S. decision-making.
He stated that U.S. forces would withdraw only once Washington is confident that Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapon for years to come. “They cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Trump also dismissed recent Iranian threats directed at U.S. technology companies, questioning Tehran’s ability to carry out such actions and downplaying the risks.
The comments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, although independent verification of the extent of damage to Iran’s military capabilities remains limited. Iranian officials have not immediately responded to the claims.
Analysts note that the remarks reflect a hardline stance, combining pressure tactics with conditional objectives, as uncertainty continues over the trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations.
