Hargeisa (Hornpost) The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), today held a meeting with the Lord Mayor of the City of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, Madam Safiya Saeed (also known as Safiya Berberaawi).
The meeting focused on strengthening the historical relationship, developmental cooperation, and mutual collaboration between the two sides.
President Cirro expressed his gratitude to Madam Safiya Saeed for her visit to Somaliland, highlighting the vital role played by the Somaliland diaspora community in Sheffield in the development of Somaliland. He praised them for acting as a bridge connecting Somaliland with the United Kingdom, and for consistently advocating for Somaliland’s right to self-determination and its national cause.
The President also recalled that Sheffield was the first UK city to officially recognize Somaliland in 2014 — a courageous and symbolic act that strengthened ties between the people of Somaliland and the city of Sheffield, inspiring other major UK cities to follow suit.
For her part, Lord Mayor Safiya Saeed thanked the President for the warm reception and discussed key issues related to development, education, and community cooperation. She specifically emphasized the important role women play in building the Somaliland nation, and the need to enhance and support women’s participation in politics and public administration.
She pledged that Sheffield City Council would continue to support the Somaliland cause and further strengthen cooperation — particularly in the areas of education, health, investment, and community partnerships.
