Hargeisa Infrastructure Upgrade Gains Momentum With World Bank Support
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) A delegation from the World Bank and senior officials from the government of Somaliland held a high-level meeting in Hargeisa to fast-track key urban infrastructure and road development projects in the capital.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development headquarters and brought together top government figures, including ministers from finance, economic development, the presidency, transport and road development, as well as the mayor of Hargeisa and the ministry’s director general.
Discussions focused on advancing the implementation of major development programs, including the Somaliland Urban Infrastructure Improvement Project (SHIIP) and the Second Somalia Urban Resilience Project (SURP-II). These initiatives are aimed at upgrading the Hargeisa–Ina Guuxa corridor and improving the city’s broader road infrastructure network.
Officials also reviewed project readiness, flood risk assessments in Hargeisa, and strategies to strengthen technical coordination among implementing agencies to ensure efficient delivery.
The projects are expected to significantly benefit Hargeisa by improving road connectivity, reducing flooding risks, and enhancing urban mobility and public services.
They also support the broader development agenda of Hargeisa’s mayor, Abdikarim Ahmed Moge, by strengthening infrastructure delivery and boosting the city’s capacity to implement large-scale development initiatives.
The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to accelerate large-scale development projects, deepen cooperation between the World Bank and Somaliland authorities, and enhance the quality of urban infrastructure and public services in Hargeisa.
