HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has strongly rejected a statement issued by the Federal Government of Somalia regarding Somaliland’s international diplomatic engagements, describing it as “misleading and hostile.”
Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mogadishu’s remarks were an attempt to “distort history and deny political reality,” reaffirming that Somaliland restored its independence on May 18, 1991, and has since operated as a fully self-governing state with its own institutions, security, elections, and foreign policy.
The government emphasized that President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi’s recent international engagements reflect Somaliland’s sovereign right to conduct foreign relations and expand global cooperation.
Somaliland stressed that its diplomacy is based on self-determination, democratic legitimacy, peace, and national interest, adding that no external authority has jurisdiction over its international partnerships.
It specifically defended its growing relations with Israel and other partners, stating that such cooperation is rooted in mutual respect, regional stability, and economic development.
The statement added that Somaliland will not seek approval from Mogadishu and will continue to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence against any political pressure or diplomatic objections.
Despite tensions, Somaliland reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability while maintaining firm resolve to protect its international standing and political autonomy.
