Mogadishu – (Horn Post) Social media platforms in Somalia have circulated unverified claims alleging that Saudi Arabia provided financial support to Somali authorities in connection with a reported decision to downgrade or cut ties with the United Arab Emirates.
According to the circulating posts, the funds were allegedly delivered to National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and received by its director, Mahad Mohamed Salad. The same claims suggest that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had expected the funds to be delivered directly to him as part of broader support for his administration.
Sources cited in the social media reports, described as close to Villa Somalia, allege that the president was displeased upon learning that the funds had been handled through NISA without his prior knowledge. The claims further suggest that the money was linked to earlier Saudi engagement with Somali officials, including reported contacts last month involving NISA representatives.
The posts also allege that the funds were intended to offset financial gaps following changes in support previously associated with the UAE, particularly in relation to security assistance. However, no official statements have been issued by the Somali government, Saudi authorities, or the UAE confirming these claims.
Political analysts note that such reports, when confined to social media, should be treated with caution, as internal power dynamics and financial allegations are often amplified without verification. As of publication, none of the parties mentioned have publicly commented on the matter.
Horn Post could not independently verify the authenticity of the claims.
