Saudi-led coalition intercepts Houthi ballistic missiles as tensions escalate over Sanaa airport

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post)  A Saudi-led military coalition said Monday it intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) toward southern Saudi Arabia, marking the latest escalation in the long-running conflict between the Iran-aligned group and the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

The coalition’s official military spokesperson said air defense systems successfully intercepted the missiles before they reached their intended targets in southern Saudi Arabia. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were released.

Meanwhile, the Houthi movement said Saudi-led coalition aircraft carried out multiple airstrikes targeting Sanaa International Airport, accusing the coalition of attacking civilian infrastructure.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government, however, said its forces targeted the airport’s runway to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing, alleging the flight was linked to support for the Houthi movement.

Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree condemned the strikes, describing the attack on Sanaa International Airport as an “unjustified and blatant act of aggression.”

In a separate statement carried by Yemen’s state-run Saba News Agency, the Ministry of Defense accused the Houthis of preventing Yemenia Airways aircraft from operating at Sanaa International Airport. The ministry also reiterated the government’s position that the Houthis receive backing from Iran, a claim repeatedly denied by Tehran.

The latest exchange underscores renewed tensions in Yemen, where years of conflict have devastated infrastructure and fueled one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Despite previous ceasefire efforts, intermittent missile attacks and airstrikes continue to threaten regional security.
