England appeared on course to reach only the second World Cup final in its history, having taken the lead through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. However, Argentina staged another late comeback, with Enzo Fernández equalizing in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez scored the winner in stoppage time (90+2). Messi provided the decisive assists for both goals.
Messi Praises Argentina’s Character
Speaking after the match, Messi praised the mentality of the Argentine squad.

“We spoke about it before the match. In the end, it was just a football match, but it was a very special one, especially because it was against England, with all the historical context surrounding it. Of all the possible semifinal opponents, this was the match we most wanted to win.”
His remarks came after Argentina’s players celebrated the victory by displaying a banner reading **”The Malvinas (Falkland Islands) Are Argentine,”** referencing the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the South Atlantic archipelago. The territorial disagreement escalated into the 1982 Falklands War, and Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands.

Looking ahead to the final, Messi praised Spain, describing the European side as one of the strongest teams in international football.
