GALKAYO, Puntland —(HornPost) Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni held a high-level security meeting with senior commanders of Puntland’s military and police forces in Galkayo on Friday, underscoring the regional administration’s focus on maintaining stability following recent security tensions in Mudug Region.
According to a statement from the Puntland Presidency, the meeting brought together senior commanders led by Puntland Darawish Forces Commander Gen. Adan Abdi Hashi and Puntland Police Commander Gen. Mumin Abdi Shire, along with other senior security officials.
The discussions focused on the security situation in Mudug Region and Puntland more broadly, with participants reviewing ongoing security operations and measures aimed at strengthening public safety and regional stability.
President Deni urged security commanders to enhance coordination, maintain a high level of vigilance, and continue fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities in safeguarding Puntland’s security.
The meeting comes days after armed clashes were reported in Galkayo involving Puntland security forces and forces aligned with Somalia’s Federal Government. The incidents also coincided with reports that weapons stored at a federal security facility in Galkayo were seized during the unrest. The federal government has not publicly confirmed Puntland’s account of those events.
Although the Puntland Presidency’s statement did not directly reference the recent clashes, the president’s engagement with senior military and police commanders signals the administration’s continued emphasis on strengthening security readiness amid heightened political and security tensions between Puntland and Mogadishu.
The developments highlight the fragile security environment in central Somalia, where disputes between the Federal Government and Puntland periodically intersect with broader concerns over governance, security coordination, and control of strategic areas in Mudug Region.
As one of Somalia’s most strategically important regions, Galkayo remains a focal point for security operations, making continued dialogue and coordination essential to preventing further escalation while preserving regional stability.
