Hargeisa, (Hornpost) The National Drought Relief Committee of the Republic of Somaliland, chaired by Vice President H.E. Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, held a high-level meeting today with both international and local humanitarian organizations operating in the country.
The meeting aimed to bolster collaboration and speed up emergency response to the ongoing drought affecting various regions. Discussions focused on assessing the current drought situation, identifying immediate humanitarian needs, and enhancing coordination to address the impact on vulnerable communities.
Committee members and humanitarian representatives emphasized the urgent need for joint, strategic action to ensure that aid reaches those most affected. The National Committee presented the scale and severity of the drought and outlined the government’s national emergency response plan, highlighting key areas where partners can contribute.
The two sides agreed to: Strengthen ongoing cooperation and information sharing, ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable groups, and establish a coordinated, long-term operational framework.
In a show of early support, PHARO Foundation handed over 1,000 water tankers to the Committee—marking its initial contribution toward the national drought response.
Representatives from both local and international humanitarian organizations operating in Somaliland also spoke at the event.
They pledged their commitment to actively participate in the ongoing drought response efforts across the country and emphasized the importance of working together to alleviate the suffering of affected communities.
In his closing remarks, H.E. Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi urged humanitarian actors to step up their efforts, stating that the situation demands shared responsibility. He also renewed his call to the international community and Somaliland citizens at home and abroad to provide urgent, meaningful assistance to drought-affected communities.
