Nairobi (Horn Post) — Kenyan authorities say they have thwarted a series of planned terror attacks allegedly orchestrated by Al-Shabaab, with the capital Nairobi identified as the main target.
In a statement published on its official X account (formerly Twitter), the Counter Terrorism Police Kenya (CTPK) said the operation was carried out in coordination with national intelligence agencies and followed months of covert surveillance and intelligence gathering.
“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill large numbers of Kenyan citizens in Nairobi have once again been thwarted by intelligence agencies,” the CTPK said in the statement.
According to Kenyan police, the suspects were part of what they described as an active terror network operating from within the Dadaab refugee camps. Authorities said the cell had been under close monitoring for several months before security forces moved in to dismantle it.
The operation reportedly led to the seizure of more than 600 rounds of ammunition, pistols, hand grenades, improvised explosive materials, and narcotics. Police said all the confiscated items were intended for use in attacks planned inside Nairobi.
CTPK further disclosed that the suspects had intended to carry out the attacks during the holy month of Ramadan and were also assessing the possibility of kidnapping foreign nationals and hijacking vehicles as part of their operations.
“The city of Nairobi remains safe due to the dedication of brave men and women in our security agencies, who spend long hours tracking down and apprehending terrorists and other dangerous criminals,” the statement added.
Kenya has repeatedly accused Al-Shabaab of attempting cross-border attacks and urban terror operations, particularly in major cities, as part of the group’s ongoing campaign against the Kenyan state.
