Israel Grants Agreement to Somaliland’s First Ambassador, Expands Bilateral Cooperation.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a new step in the development of diplomatic relations with Somaliland, confirming that Israel has granted agrément to Somaliland’s first Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Hagi.

The announcement follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Somaliland on December 26, 2025, and comes in line with understandings reached during the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Somaliland last month.

According to the statement, Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Hagi currently serves as an advisor to the President of Somaliland and was part of a core group of officials involved in advancing diplomatic engagement between the two sides throughout 2025.

Israel also confirmed that an Israeli Ambassador to Somaliland will be appointed soon, a move described as an additional step toward strengthening bilateral relations.

Separately, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that a specialized training course is being held this week in Israel by MASHAV, the ministry’s international cooperation center. The course is designed for officials from the Somaliland Water Authority and the Director General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Water.

The program focuses on supporting the construction, development, and planning of the water sector in Somaliland, while also enhancing professional and technical cooperation between the two sides.

The developments mark a continued expansion of political and sector-based engagement following the formalization of relations late last year.
