TEHRAN, Iran (Horn post) Iran has announced the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions across the Middle East following what Tehran described as ceasefire violations by the United States and Israel.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC Navy) said the vital maritime route is now closed to all vessels, citing security concerns linked to ongoing military developments in the region.
In a stern warning issued on Tuesday, Iranian naval forces ordered all ships to stay away from the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any vessel approaching the waterway could face serious security consequences.
“Do not approach the Strait of Hormuz. Otherwise, your security will be disrupted,” the Iranian Navy warned in its statement.
The move comes as regional tensions continue to intensify, with Israel and Hezbollah accusing each other of violating a newly brokered ceasefire agreement, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, handles nearly a fifth of global oil supplies, meaning any disruption could trigger major consequences for international energy markets and global trade.
