WASHINGTON, D.C. (Horn post) IMF reaffirms strong support for Ethiopia’s economic reform agenda during talks with Finance Minister Ahmed Shide in Washington, as global economic pressures and inflation challenges persist.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reaffirmed its strong support for Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reform program amid mounting global economic pressures, following high-level talks held on the margins of the 2026 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings.
An Ethiopian delegation led by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to review progress under Ethiopia’s Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda.
The delegation reported sustained momentum in economic reforms despite external challenges, including spillover effects from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Economic Progress and Challenges
Discussions focused on Ethiopia’s improving macroeconomic indicators, including strong economic growth, easing inflationary pressures, and gradual improvements in fiscal and external balances.
However, officials also acknowledged rising risks stemming from global supply chain disruptions, as well as increased prices of fuel and fertilizer.
The Ethiopian side emphasized the need for timely, predictable, and scaled-up international financial support to help stabilize the economy while advancing long-term development priorities, including climate resilience and structural transformation.
IMF Response
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva commended Ethiopia’s reform progress and reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to providing coordinated financial and technical support in close partnership with the World Bank.
