DIRE DAWA, Ethiopia (Horn Post) — Officials from Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State and Oromia Regional State have agreed to strengthen cross-border security cooperation following high-level talks aimed at improving stability, preventing conflict, and enhancing coordination along their shared border.
The meeting, held in Dire Dawa, brought together senior regional government and security officials to discuss joint strategies for addressing recurring security challenges, including intercommunal violence, illegal armed activities, and cross-border criminal networks.
Both sides pledged to improve intelligence-sharing, coordinate security operations, and reinforce collaboration between local administrations and law enforcement agencies to prevent the escalation of violence in border communities.
Officials also emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue, promoting peaceful coexistence among neighboring communities, and strengthening cooperation on development initiatives designed to reduce the underlying causes of insecurity.
The Somali and Oromia regional governments reaffirmed their commitment to working together to maintain peace and stability, describing security cooperation as essential for protecting civilians, supporting economic activity, and improving regional integration.
The renewed coordination comes as Ethiopia continues efforts to address localized security challenges while advancing broader reforms aimed at strengthening governance and promoting lasting stability across the country.
