Ethiopia and Türkiye Sign Economic and Energy Cooperation Agreements in Addis Ababa.

Addis Ababa (Horn post) Abiy Ahmed and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday signed key bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening economic and energy cooperation between Ethiopia and Türkiye, following high-level talks in Addis Ababa.

The two leaders formalized their cooperation by signing the Agreed Minutes of the 9th Türkiye–Ethiopia Joint Economic Commission (JEC), alongside a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Energy Sector. The agreements are intended to deepen collaboration in areas based on mutual benefit and to consolidate the growing partnership between the two countries.

Speaking after the talks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the discussions reinforced the long-standing friendship and robust cooperation underpinning Ethiopia–Türkiye relations. He noted that both sides exchanged views on strategic areas of collaboration and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing partnerships that serve the interests of both nations.

“Our talks reinforced the enduring friendship and robust cooperation that underpin Ethiopia–Türkiye relations,” Prime Minister Abiy said, adding that continued engagement would further strengthen bilateral ties.

President Erdoğan, speaking at a joint press conference held at the National Palace following the signing ceremony, said the discussions covered a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, energy, mining, agriculture, telecommunications, and education.

“We discussed how we can unlock the potential for cooperation in many areas and how we can achieve our one-billion-dollar target in trade volume,” President Erdoğan said. He added that Türkiye is pleased to be the second-largest investor in Ethiopia.

President Erdoğan further stated that more than 200 Turkish companies are currently operating in Ethiopia, with investments totaling approximately $2.5 billion, supporting employment for around 20,000 Ethiopians. He described this contribution as a source of pride for Türkiye.

The agreements reflect both countries’ intention to expand economic engagement and strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors, as Ethiopia and Türkiye seek to elevate their partnership to a higher strategic level.
