CAIRO (Horn post) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors, including port development, maritime transport and marine resources, during high-level talks in Cairo.
According to a statement issued by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information, the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen political, economic and diplomatic ties while advancing cooperation in areas considered vital to regional trade and connectivity.
The discussions resulted in an agreement to launch practical cooperation programs focused on port infrastructure, maritime transport and the sustainable development of marine resources, reflecting a shared commitment to boosting economic integration between the two countries.
Regional security issues also featured prominently in the talks, with both leaders reviewing developments affecting the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa and the wider Middle East. They emphasized the importance of closer coordination in addressing emerging security and economic challenges across the region.
The meeting comes amid growing geopolitical competition in the Red Sea corridor, where maritime trade routes, port infrastructure and security arrangements have become increasingly significant to regional governments.
Following the presidential talks, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh held separate consultations on implementing the agreements reached by the two leaders.
President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Cairo for a three-day official visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on regional security and economic issues.
