DJIBOUTI, 23 April 2025 (News) – A wind of renewal blows on relations between Djibouti and Egypt. On Wednesday, Presidents Ismail Omar Guelleh and Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi set the milestones of a strengthened bilateral partnership from the Palace of the Republic on the occasion of a 24-hour working visit of the Egyptian Head of State to Djibouti.
The two Heads of State have shown a common will to elevate their partnership to a level of global strategic cooperation. “We believe in the ability of this partnership to advance our cooperation to new horizons,” Djibouti’s President said, outlining the outlines of a shared future based on the convergence of ambitions.
Five bilateral agreements were signed on the occasion, covering a range of areas from higher education to media, telecommunications, youth and sports. So many sectors that chart the map of an approach based on human dynamics and sustainable development.
But much more than signed texts, it was the spirit that prevailed. That of a political companionship resolutely turned towards regional peace. In a solemn appeal speech, President Guelleh stressed that “the challenges facing the Horn of Africa require us to join forces.” The stabilization of this region plagued by tensions, from Sudan to Somalia, through Yemen, was at the heart of the exchanges.
Maritime security, a vital issue for the two Red Sea coastal countries, has also attracted the attention of both leaders. The Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, strategic lung of world trade, has emerged as a common frontline. “It’s imperative to strengthen coordination… “In order to protect this passage,” hammered President Guelleh.
The two presidents also outlined the premise of a joint engagement on the Palestinian issue, with Djibouti hailing the “sister Egypt leadership” and calling for a blockade to support the rights of the Palestinian people. The echo of this solidarity extended with President Al-Sissi’s displayed willingness to bring Arab causes to the multilateral stage. He, in this regard, requested Djibouti’s support for the candidacy of Dr Khaled El-Enany to head UNESCO, a symbol of Pan-Arab unity in the world chessboard.
The enlarged meeting of the two delegations was preceded by an eight-point head-to-head between the two statesmen, an out-of-protocol moment, during which security issues in Somalia, Sudan, and navigation in Bab el-Mandeb waters were discussed.
Through this 24-hour tour, a new page opens for Djibouti and Egypt.
One of a partnership reimagined, matured in geopolitical challenges, and projected towards a future of shared stability, an ambition that the two heads of state want to embody, together, on the regional and international stage.
