ELDORET, Kenya (HornPost) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has arrived in the city of Eldoret, in western Kenya, as a guest of honor for the national holiday of Mashujaa Day—a day dedicated to honoring the heroes who fought for the country’s independence and those who contributed to its development.
Abiy attended the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations, held on Tuesday at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, with Kenyan President William Ruto hosting the event.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister’s visit underscores the significance of the diplomatic ties between the two neighboring nations, which collaborate on matters concerning trade, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, and regional security.
Abiy Honors Kenya’s Heroes
During the event, Abiy Ahmed paid tribute to Kenya’s heroes who fought for independence, as well as those who sacrificed their lives in defense of their country. The Prime Minister stated that Kenya’s history—characterized by courage, unity, and self-sacrifice—parallels Ethiopia’s own experience, citing the Battle of Adwa as an example where Ethiopians united to defend their nation.
Abiy further emphasized that both countries can build their future through deepening cooperation, particularly in the areas of clean energy, infrastructure connectivity, telecommunications, and trade.
These remarks were reported by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), citing a message the Prime Minister shared on social media.
Relations between Ethiopia and Kenya
Ethiopia and Kenya share a long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship, with both sides keen to strengthen cross-border trade, transport and energy connectivity, and security cooperation.
In February 2024, Abiy Ahmed and William Ruto signed seven memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering sectors such as energy, tourism, culture, the blue economy, and capacity building for the public service workforce.
The two countries are also cooperating on regional security and the development of economic infrastructure that connects the communities living along their borders.
This partnership is significant for the Horn of Africa, a region where countries share common interests—such as trade, the movement of people, border security, and access to new markets.
Eldoret hosts the national event
This year’s Mashujaa Day (Heroes’ Day) celebration was held in Eldoret, in Uasin Gishu County, honoring Kenya’s heroes from the struggle for independence as well as those who have contributed to the nation’s development.
The event brought together Kenyan leaders, government officials, guests from neighboring countries, and citizens from various parts of the nation.
The participation of Abiy Ahmed added a regional diplomatic dimension to the commemoration, as both governments continue efforts to strengthen their relationship and cooperation across various sectors.
The visit also serves as an opportunity for both nations to highlight the importance they place on economic and political cooperation—collaboration that can contribute to the stability and development of the Horn of Africa.
