NYON, Switzerland (Hornpost) — Somali referee Omar Artan has made football history by becoming the first non-European official appointed to referee the UEFA Super Cup, marking a landmark achievement for Somalia and African football.

Artan’s appointment is widely regarded as a milestone for diversity and international representation in European football, reflecting UEFA’s growing recognition of elite match officials from outside the continent.

The appointment adds another historic achievement to Artan’s career. He previously became the first Somali referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup, underscoring his rise among the world’s leading football officials.

However, Artan’s World Cup participation was overshadowed by travel restrictions after U.S. authorities denied him entry despite holding a valid visa, citing alleged links to individuals suspected of involvement with terrorist organizations. Artan has not been charged with any crime, and the allegations have not been publicly substantiated.

Despite that setback, Artan has continued to earn appointments to some of football’s highest-profile competitions, with the UEFA Super Cup representing another major milestone in his international refereeing career.

His selection is being celebrated as a significant achievement for Somalia, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the broader African football community, highlighting the growing global recognition of African match officials at the highest levels of the game.

Artan’s appointment also reflects UEFA’s continued efforts to promote excellence and diversity in elite officiating, with the Super Cup serving as one of European football’s most prestigious annual fixtures between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
