NAIROBI, Kenya (Horn Post) — Kenyan security forces have intensified operations along the country’s border with Somalia after authorities said they thwarted a suspected al-Shabab attack, underscoring persistent security threats in the region.
According to Kenyan officials, security personnel intercepted and disrupted the planned attack before it could be carried out. The operation forms part of broader counterterrorism efforts aimed at preventing militant infiltration from neighboring Somalia into Kenya’s northeastern counties.
The incident has prompted security agencies to reinforce surveillance, increase border patrols, and enhance intelligence-sharing among security units operating along the Kenya–Somalia frontier.
Kenya has remained on high alert due to repeated threats from al-Shabab, the Somalia-based militant group affiliated with al-Qaida, which has carried out cross-border attacks targeting civilians, security personnel, and critical infrastructure over the past decade.
The latest security operation comes as Kenya continues to play a key role in regional counterterrorism efforts, including its contribution to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which supports Somalia’s campaign against al-Shabab.
Authorities have urged residents in border communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening national security and protecting communities from extremist threats.
