President Irro, Kulmiye and KAAH leaders remember celebrated Somali poet as a cultural icon and veteran of Somaliland’s liberation struggle
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — Somaliland’s political leadership has paid tribute to renowned Somali poet, lyricist and playwright Adam Tarabi Jama, who died in Hargeisa at the age of 78, describing him as one of the country’s greatest literary figures and a key contributor to Somaliland’s liberation struggle and cultural heritage.
Tarabi’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from government officials, political leaders, artists and members of the public, recognizing his decades-long contribution to Somali poetry, music and theatre.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” extended condolences on behalf of the government and the people of Somaliland to Tarabi’s family, relatives and the artistic community.
In his message, President Irro described the late poet as a distinguished cultural icon who devoted his life to serving society through literature and the arts, while playing a significant role in Somaliland’s struggle for liberation and the country’s post-war reconstruction.
“The late Adam Tarabi Jama served his people through both his words and actions, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Somaliland’s cultural history,” the president said, praying for the poet to be granted eternal peace.
KAAH Party Chairman Mahmoud Hashi Abdi also paid tribute, describing Tarabi as one of the leading figures in Somali poetry and literature whose patriotism, love for his country, compassion and commitment to faith earned him widespread respect.
Hashi said Tarabi’s literary legacy would continue to inspire future generations and extended condolences to his family, relatives and the Somali people.
Meanwhile, Kulmiye Party Chairman Mohamed Kahin Ahmed issued a separate condolence message on behalf of the party’s Executive Committee, Central Committee and members.
Kahin described Tarabi as a visionary poet whose mastery of the Somali language, culture and literature would never be forgotten, adding that his poetry remains an enduring part of Somali cultural heritage.
He also praised Tarabi as a veteran of Somaliland’s liberation struggle, noting that he supported the country’s campaign for self-determination through his poetry, public advocacy and patriotic writings.
“Adam Tarabi Jama was a towering symbol of the Somali language, culture and literary tradition whose contributions will continue to inspire generations to come,” Kahin said.
The tributes reflect the profound influence Tarabi had on Somali literature and national identity, with leaders across Somaliland recognizing him as one of the country’s most celebrated poets and cultural figures.
