
Muse Haji Abdi Du’ale Takes Over as New Chairman of Somaliland’s Upper House
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) Somaliland’s Guurti Council on Sunday elected Muuse Haji Abdi Du’ale as its new chairman, ending the 22-year leadership of Saleban Mohamoud Aadan, who resigned from the position after more than two decades at the helm of the country’s traditional upper house.
Muse Haji Abdi Du’ale was elected by 52 members of the Guurti Council following a special session convened after Saleban officially announced his resignation.
The newly elected chairman will replace Saleban Mohamoud Aadan, who had served as the Speaker of the Somaliland Guurti since 2004.
Saleban Mohamoud Adan Resigns After Two Decades in Office
Saleban Mohamoud Adan announced his resignation during an extraordinary session of the Guurti Council held on Sunday, voluntarily stepping down from the leadership role he had occupied for 22 years.
The council accepted his resignation, paving the way for the election of a new speaker.
Saleban, one of Somaliland’s longest-serving political figures, played a significant role in the development of the country’s institutions after Somaliland restored its self-declared independence in 1991.
President Irro Welcomes New Guurti Leadership
Somaliland President Abdiraxmaan Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) received both the newly elected Guurti Chairman Muse Haji Abdi Du’ale and outgoing chairman Saleban Mohamoud Adan at the presidential office.
President Irro congratulated the new chairman on receiving the confidence of the Guurti members and wished him success in carrying out his responsibilities.
He said the new leadership should strengthen the role of the Guurti Council in protecting peace, stability, national unity, and Somaliland’s democratic process.
The president also praised Saleban Mohamoud Adan for his long service to Somaliland, describing him as a respected national elder whose leadership and dedication contributed to the country’s development.
Kaah Party Leader Congratulates New Chairman and Praises Saleban’s Legacy
The leader of Somaliland’s opposition Kaah Party, Mohamoud Hashi Abdi, congratulated Muse Haji Abdi Du’ale on his election and thanked Saleban Mohamoud Adan for his years of service.
“Today, I respectfully bid farewell and extend my gratitude and prayers to the former chairman of the Guurti Council, Saleban Mohamoud Adan, who stepped down from leading the council he guided for many years,” Mohamoud Hashi said.
He described Saleban as a national elder who had served his people and country for nearly six decades, adding that he left behind a historic legacy that would be remembered for years.
Mohamoud Hashi Abdi also wished the new chairman success, saying he hoped Muse Haji Abdi Du’ale would become a respected leader who benefits both the Guurti Council and Somaliland.
