HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) President of the Republic of Somaliland Abdiraxman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) on Monday attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of Radio Market in Hargeisa, months after a major fire destroyed parts of the commercial center.
The market was heavily damaged by a devastating blaze in early 2025, causing significant financial losses for traders operating in the area.
During the ceremony, President Irro said his administration is committed to rebuilding and modernizing public services and commercial infrastructure as part of its wider development agenda.
“The Unity and Action government is one that understands the needs of its people and gives special priority to reconstruction, development and the modernization of business services,” the president said.
President Calls for Protection of Public Land
President Irro urged Somaliland citizens to protect government-owned land, describing public land as a foundation for national development projects, urban expansion and improving the appearance of cities across the country.
He said the government would continue supporting the growth and modernization of commercial markets throughout Somaliland.
The president also encouraged traders who will operate in the newly rebuilt Idaacadda Market to maintain high standards of quality, cleanliness and protection of public property.
Irro Urges Citizens to Pay Taxes to Support Development
President Irro emphasized the importance of tax contributions, saying taxes are a key pillar for national development and institution building.
He called on citizens to fulfill their tax obligations to help accelerate essential public services and development programs.
The president concluded his remarks by urging Somaliland residents to strengthen security, stability and national unity, which he described as essential foundations for the country’s progress.
“The city is becoming the capital of a recognized country, so it should look like one.” said the President Irro
Officials Highlight Importance of Market Reconstruction
Somaliland Minister of Public Works, Land and Housing Hussein Ahmed Aydid and Minister of Information, Culture and Public Awareness Barkhad Jama Batun also addressed the ceremony, highlighting the importance of rebuilding Idaacadda (Radio) Market after the fire and restoring opportunities for affected traders.
Hargeisa Mayor Engineer Abdirisak Mohamed Farah (Wiwa) welcomed the reconstruction project, saying the rebuilding of the market represents an important step toward supporting businesses that suffered losses from the fire.
