ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn Post) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for greater national unity, stronger democratic institutions and continued political dialogue, while defending his government’s reform agenda and security policies amid ongoing challenges in parts of the country.
Speaking at Ethiopian parliament, Abiy thanked lawmakers from both the ruling Prosperity Party and opposition parties for their service over the past five years, urging them to continue contributing to Ethiopia’s development regardless of political affiliation.
“We all share responsibility for building Ethiopia,” Abiy said, emphasizing that national service extends beyond parliamentary office.
Democracy and National Dialogue
The prime minister described Ethiopia’s recent electoral process as an important democratic milestone, saying voters demonstrated resilience despite attempts to discourage participation and disrupt the polls.
Abiy argued that the elections reflected the Ethiopian public’s commitment to constitutional governance and rejected political extremism. He said the government remains committed to expanding political participation through an inclusive national dialogue designed to address long-standing political and social grievances.
He also reiterated support for democratic reforms, including proposals to strengthen political competition and discussions on constitutional term limits for future governments.
Security and Peace
Addressing security concerns, Abiy acknowledged that armed groups continue to operate in some regions but maintained that Ethiopia’s overall security situation has improved.
The prime minister said the government has strengthened law enforcement and security institutions while calling on citizens to cooperate with authorities in combating insurgent groups and maintaining national stability.
The prime minister argued that community-based dialogue has helped reduce ethnic and religious tensions in several parts of the country, although isolated security incidents continue to occur.
Tigray and the Horn of Africa
While Abiy did not announce new measures regarding the Tigray region, his remarks underscored the government’s broader strategy of promoting political dialogue, national reconciliation and institutional reforms following years of conflict.
The speech comes as Ethiopia continues implementing post-conflict recovery efforts under the Pretoria peace agreement while navigating complex political and security challenges that remain significant for stability across the Horn of Africa.
Regional observers continue to closely monitor Ethiopia’s internal political developments, given the country’s strategic influence on security, trade and diplomatic relations throughout the Horn of Africa.
Abiy concluded by urging Ethiopians to reject political violence, support peaceful democratic processes and work collectively toward a more stable and prosperous future.
