HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Government of Somaliland held its 65th Council of Ministers meeting at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, chaired by Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, who is currently serving as acting president, with ministers reviewing key national developments ranging from security and economic conditions to healthcare and fisheries development.
During the meeting, senior government officials presented comprehensive updates on the country’s overall security situation, economic outlook, public health challenges, and strategic development priorities.
Somaliland Security Situation Remains Stable
Somaliland Interior and National Security Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab briefed the cabinet on the country’s overall security environment, confirming that national security remains stable and that no major security threats or internal unrest have been recorded.
The minister said Somaliland’s security institutions remain on full alert and have strengthened preventive measures to safeguard peace and stability, urging citizens to actively support national security efforts during what he described as an important transitional period for the country.
Somaliland Economy Faces Pressure from Middle East Crisis
Finance and Economic Development Minister Abdillahi Hassan Aden updated ministers on Somaliland’s ongoing cooperation with the World Bank, highlighting the smooth implementation of development projects funded by the international institution.
He also briefed the cabinet on the recent visit by World Bank Somaliland Representative Hideki Matsunaga, who praised Somaliland’s government for effective project management and visited key economic infrastructure projects including Berbera Port and the Berbera Free Zone.
The minister warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East and disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz shipping corridor have caused increases in fuel prices, maritime transport costs, insurance expenses and inflation, creating growing economic pressure on households and businesses.
Somaliland Health Ministry Intensifies Response to Dengue and Chikungunya
Health Development Minister Dr. Hussein Bashir Hirsi informed the cabinet that Somaliland’s health sector continues responding to outbreaks of Dengue Fever and Chikungunya, noting that infection rates are beginning to decline but that continued public health vigilance remains critical.
The ministry has expanded public awareness campaigns focused on mosquito prevention and community cooperation to reduce the spread of diseases.
The minister also reported progress in the ongoing National Blood Donation Campaign, running from June 14–18, 2026, aimed at strengthening Somaliland’s national blood reserves and improving emergency medical response capacity.
Looking ahead, he announced plans to establish a National Blood Bank Center by 2027, which is expected to significantly improve the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Somaliland Fisheries Sector Shows Growth
Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Ali Jama Farah (Buured) reported improvements in Somaliland’s fisheries sector, saying fish production and domestic market sales have increased in recent months.
He said higher fish consumption has partly been driven by rising meat prices and drought-related livestock pressures, increasing demand for seafood in major cities.
Despite improvements, the minister said fish production remains below national demand and stressed the need to expand production capacity for both domestic consumption and export markets.
The ministry is also working to facilitate access to internationally recognized health certification standards aimed at expanding Somaliland’s fish exports into regional and global markets.
Somaliland Vice President Calls for National Unity and Vigilance
Closing the cabinet meeting, Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi emphasized the importance of maintaining national unity and strengthening public awareness around protecting Somaliland’s security and political stability.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with state institutions, particularly during what he described as a sensitive political period following recent diplomatic developments surrounding Somaliland’s recognition-related engagement with Israel.
The vice president warned against any actions that could undermine Somaliland’s national interests and called on the public to stand together in defending the country’s peace, sovereignty and strategic priorities.
