Somaliland President Holds Historic Meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Signs Strategic Cooperation Agreement.
JERUSALEM, Israel (Horn post) — President of the republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro,” held a historic high-level meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his official visit to Israel, marking what officials described as the most significant diplomatic milestone yet in relations between Somaliland and Israel.
During the landmark talks, President Irro thanked Prime Minister Netanyahu for what he described as Israel’s historic and politically significant decision to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent sovereign state on December 26, 2025, a move widely viewed as opening a new chapter in Somaliland’s decades-long pursuit of international recognition.
According to Somaliland officials, President Irro said Israel’s recognition was not merely a diplomatic decision but a formal acknowledgment of Somaliland’s longstanding political, legal, and historical reality.
He emphasized that for more than 35 years, Somaliland has demonstrated a successful model of governance built on peace, democratic institutions, political stability, and functional statehood, distinguishing itself as one of the Horn of Africa’s most stable territories.
In a major diplomatic development following the meeting, Somaliland and Israel officially signed a Strategic Cooperation Declaration, establishing the foundation for long-term bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
The agreement outlines enhanced collaboration in economic development, security cooperation, technology transfer, foreign investment, and social development programs, signaling a broader strategic partnership between both governments.
Officials said the declaration represents the beginning of a new era in Somaliland-Israel relations, creating a formal framework for deeper cooperation based on mutual respect, shared interests, and long-term strategic objectives.
In a symbolic gesture marking the occasion, President Irro presented Prime Minister Netanyahu with a National Honor Medal, recognizing what Somaliland described as his leadership role in granting formal recognition to Somaliland.
Analysts say the historic meeting could significantly reshape diplomatic dynamics in the Horn of Africa and Middle East, as Somaliland seeks to expand international partnerships following Israel’s recognition.
