TAIPEI, Taiwan (Horn post) Officials and diplomats gathered Friday in Taipei to celebrate the opening of a new representative office for Somaliland, marking another step forward in rapidly expanding diplomatic relations between Somaliland and Taiwan.
The newly inaugurated office, located in a diplomatic complex housing several foreign missions, is expected to strengthen Somaliland’s international engagement and broaden cooperation with Taiwan and other diplomatic partners.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Somaliland’s Representative to Taiwan emphasized the strategic importance of the relationship, describing Taiwan as one of Somaliland’s closest international allies.
“Taiwan is a very important ally for us. We have the same principles in terms of democracy, freedom and rule of law — completely different from authoritarian regimes that are seeking to put pressure on both Taiwan and Somaliland,” the Somaliland representative said.
Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has steadily expanded ties with Taiwan in recent years despite diplomatic pressure from regional powers opposed to the partnership.
During the event, Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister praised Somaliland’s growing importance in Taipei’s Africa strategy, saying the partnership has become a model for Taiwan’s broader engagement on the continent.
“I believe our partnership can serve as a valuable model for neighboring countries and help advance Taiwan’s innovative and interactive engagement with Africa,” Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister said.
Taiwanese officials described Somaliland as Taiwan’s first major strategic partner in East Africa, underscoring cooperation in diplomacy, education, development and regional security.
The opening of the new office highlights deepening relations between the two governments as both sides continue expanding their cooperation despite increasing geopolitical pressure from larger neighboring states.
Analysts say the Somaliland-Taiwan partnership is increasingly drawing international attention as both governments strengthen their alliance based on democratic governance, mutual interests and international cooperation.
