HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — The U.S. Ambassador visited the ancient Laas Geel archaeological site on Saturday, underscoring growing international interest in Somaliland’s rich cultural heritage and tourism potential.
Laas Geel, located outside Hargeisa, is widely regarded as one of the most significant historical and tourist attractions in Somaliland. The site is renowned for its remarkably preserved prehistoric rock paintings, some of which date back several thousand years, making it one of the most important archaeological treasures in the Horn of Africa.
The ambassador was welcomed by officials from Somaliland’s Ministry of Trade and Tourism, led by Deputy Minister Jawhar Said Warsame. He was accompanied by the ministry’s Director General, Eng. Mahmoud Hussein Aden (Jabake), and other senior ministry officials.
During the visit, ministry representatives briefed the ambassador on Laas Geel’s historical, cultural and tourism significance, emphasizing its role in preserving human heritage and supporting Somaliland’s efforts to expand its tourism industry.
The ambassador toured various sections of the site, closely examining the ancient rock art and unique archaeological features that have made Laas Geel one of the oldest and most valuable cultural heritage sites in the region.
Officials highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at protecting and promoting Somaliland’s historical landmarks, while encouraging greater international recognition of the country’s cultural and tourism assets.
The visit reflects increasing global interest in Somaliland’s archaeological heritage at a time when authorities are intensifying efforts to preserve key cultural sites and position the territory as an emerging destination for heritage tourism in East Africa.
