WASHINGTON (AP/Horn post) — The U.S. Secret Service shot a person near the White House on Saturday, while a bystander was also struck by gunfire, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation.
Both individuals were reported to be in critical condition, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation.
Journalists inside the White House complex reported hearing multiple gunshots and were instructed to shelter inside the press briefing room as law enforcement responded to the incident.
In a statement posted on X, the [U.S. Secret Service] said it was “aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW,” approximately one block from the White House, and that agents were “working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground.”
Kash Patel also confirmed the response in a social media post, saying federal officers were investigating the shooting and that authorities would “update the public as we’re able.”
Authorities have not yet released details about the circumstances leading to the shooting, the identities of those injured, or whether additional suspects were involved.
