Somaliland Insurance Authority, Firms Push to Fast-Track Motor Insurance Rollout.

Regulators and insurers agree on technical rollout, public awareness drive, and market reforms to strengthen road safety and financial protection.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) (NIA) The National Insurance Authority of Republic of Somaliland (NIA) on Saturday held a high-level meeting with private insurance companies to accelerate the implementation of motor vehicle insurance, a key reform aimed at strengthening road safety and financial protection.

The meeting, chaired by NIA Chairman Ahmed Hirsi Duale, brought together Deputy Chairman Abdirashid Suleiman Mohamed, Director General Abdisalan Mohamed Mohamoud, and representatives from leading insurance firms.

Officials said discussions focused on fast-tracking compulsory motor insurance, organizing a national insurance market development conference, and expanding public awareness campaigns on the importance of insurance coverage.

Participants agreed to immediately activate a technical committee to coordinate implementation, streamline regulatory steps, and lead preparations for the upcoming conference. The committee will also oversee nationwide awareness initiatives targeting drivers, transport operators, and the public.

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to accelerate motor insurance implementation and advance broader reforms to modernize Somaliland’s insurance sector.

Analysis: Why Motor Insurance Matters in Somaliland

The push to implement motor vehicle insurance marks a significant step in formalizing Somaliland’s financial and transport systems.

Financial Protection: Motor insurance helps drivers and victims cover costs related to road accidents, reducing out-of-pocket expenses.

Road Safety Incentives: Insurance systems often encourage safer driving through compliance and risk-based pricing.

Economic Stability: A functioning insurance sector spreads risk, supports businesses, and attracts investment.

Regulatory Development: The initiative strengthens oversight and aligns Somaliland with regional and global insurance standards.

If fully implemented, officials say the policy could transform the transport sector, reduce accident-related financial shocks, and expand the country’s formal financial services industry.
